Hi Guys!

I have an old Delta 24 inch scroll saw that I was thinking of selling on craigslist because I haven't used it much.

But then wouldn't you know I found a use for it recently which convinced me I should keep it.

In a recent thread the question came up as to how thick a piece of wood a scroll saw could cut satisfactorily.

Thinking about it, the answer must relate to the TPI of the blade and/or the thickness of the material. With the scroll saw, where does the sawdust go? With a bandsaw it is easy to see that you want the gullet to be able to remove the sawdust without becoming compacted with it.

But the scroll Saw's blade reciprocates. So it doesn't seem to be able to clear it self of sawdust, if the stroke of the blade is less than half of the thickness of the material being cut.

So I'm guessing if my scroll saw has a stroke of 1 inch, then the maximum thickness that I should be able to saw satisfactorily would be a bit less than 1/2 inch.

Is this a reasonable conclusion?
