View Full Version : Backing out of BLO

I applied blo to a small box made of bubinga. Most of the surface worked quite well but several small spots seem to be exuding the finish after more than 2 weeks as if they were end grain that prevents the blo from solidifying. When I followed with a film finish, these areas appeared quite glossy and stood out like a sore thumb. I have sanded to 600 grit and, when I wipe away the dust, these areas again appear glossy.

Tonight, I soaked a small part of a paper towel with naphtha and wetted the areas repeatedly thinking that it might "extract" the non-polymerized blo. After 2 applications, it seems to be marginally working. Does anyone know how to remove the excess blo (if that is the problem)?

Thanks,
David

Right there is one reason why I NEVER use BLO ... it will NEVER totally cure/harden/solidify/polymerize ... it migrates deep into the pores, and lays there, waiting to aggravate the $hit out of you.
