I'm building a piano keyboard bench for my wife that has a top that will extend 1/2" beyond the apron on all four sides. The lid is 16" x 36" x 7/8" thick of poplar & the aprons are 3/4" hard maple I've been looking for an overlay hinge that is unseen under the extension & will allow for the extension, but am having trouble locating one that isn't outrageouly priced. I've called the big box stores, but they have no idea what I'm talking about.

I've seen the Rockler Torsion Hinge (http://www.rockler.com/lid-stay-torsion-hinge-lid-support-satin-nickel), but don't need to have it hold the lid open at an angle. I'd like to have a hinge similar to tthis but without the torsion feature.

Any suggestions?

I may have found something that will work(?). It's called a chest hinge.

Just curious, what will hold the lid open, or does the chest hinge have a locking device?

I'm really not concerned about holding the lid open at any particular position as the intent is only to hold music sheets, etc, as my wife learns to use the keyboard. The cavity below the lid is about 2 1/2" deep and it could remain at 90° when in use.
Perhaps "overlay" is not the correct description for the hinge I'm looking for; I just want to be able to have the lid overhang the bench by 1/2" all around.
