I am at a loss as to how this should be done. The fence is not tall enough to support a U style jig and the back does not support one. How do you guys with this type saw cut these tenons?

Using stops on the carriage and a dado blade very effective and I think safer than a jig. Assuming that you can use a dado, many sliders cannot I have a Grizzly G0623XZ.

Al, mines a combination machine so I use the sliding table with the shaper.

For a single function machine use a dado set with the piece horizontal.

You'll need to fabricate a bridge or overhead guard.............Regards, Rod.

Al, when I had a table saw, this was my preferred method for cutting tenons. Many people recommend cutting them with a dado stack (workpiece on its side) but a tenon jig is a much better way IMO. You could look at the manual of one of these. I had a Delta Tenon jig. You can find the manual online. Or Rockler here: http://www.rockler.com/heavy-duty-tenoning-jig.

The kind of shop-made jig you are describing that fits over the rip fence is surely less expensive. It would be my second choice. Plans for these are all over the web. You make a "box" that fits over both sides of your rip fence, so it can be stable. I have not used that kind of jig.

I wrote a set of notes on how to do cut tenons with a tenon jig like the Delta. I don't know how to send them to you. Ihttps://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQUZXtrhWb00va98ZWjh_SJZr3PcUCyu 48o6whEKnsua6xtU5glf you would like, PM me your email and I will send them by email.
