I just purchased a plane that says "fulton tool company jointer plane" I noticed that the width was 2" 3/8 and the Stanley 4 1/2 are the same width. Is this a 4 1/2? Is this a Sargent 4 1/2 with a Fulton blade? It has a 409 - 414 stamped in the lever cap. I got it for $20.00. Don, im sure you would know this. You've seen a lot of Sargents.

EDIT: I think this is just a #4 now. It just looks wider, I guess. I noticed that it said 2" 3/8 overall width not the blade. That would probably make it a #4.

Sorry for the bother guys....

DOes any one know if this is a Fulton or a Sargent? Or is that one in the same? I cant seem to find this particular frog made in Sargent planes. It does have the fulton blade but I guess that doesnt mean anything...

Sears & Roebuck would let out contracts each year for tools to be sold by Sears. There was the Dunlap Brand, and the Fulton brand....both later merged into the Craftsman Brand name. Fultons usually were made by Sargent. The Dunlaps were Usually by either Stanley or Millers Falls....unless Sargent was the low bidder that year. Lateral lever on your plane seems to be a Sargent one. 409 and 414 were Sargent plane numbers.

Sometimes, there was the Fulton stamp on the iron...sometimes the Sargent one. Some would even have the "Approved" and a "4D BB" stamp with the Sears model number under it.

If you look at Patrick Leach's Blood & Gore:

http://www.supertool.com/

You may see where the confusion lies. His specifications list a plane's blade width by the plane length.

Folks on ebay and other places list it by the plane's overall width.

Jim, that clears up a lot then. Thats where I was looking. I didnt realize he was listing the blade width... Thank Jim, that helps a lot now and certainly in the future.

Thats awesome information, Don. Thats what I call investigative reporting. Your website has so much good information. Im on your website 50 times a day but Ive never seen that page. By the way, if I view your website in Chrome I cant click on anything. I get this weird mouse cursor. but it works in firefox.

Thanks!!

I'm not thrilled with godaddy, but switching web hosting would be a real undertaking. Maybe after I retire!

Finally got the ok to reply...

As far as I have seen, there were no 4 1/2 size Fultons. It is true that the bulk of them were made by Sargent (yours included), and that Sargent essentially rebranded the cutter and lever cap of their flagship models. Fultons aren't trash planes. In 1925 they were made by United Hardware iirc.

But in the 30's sometime, Millers Falls got the contract. The Fulton 3700 series are rebranded MF planes with different paint, lever cap, name/model stamp, and no frog adjustment screw. The Fulton 3711, for instance, is essentially the Mohawk Shelburne 814. They made quite a few in this configuration.

The BB mark on Fulton, Craftsman, and Dunlap planes is Sears' oem marker for MF.

Howdy Glen and welcome to the Creek. Thanks for relating another bit of information on the origins of planes.

I am always wondering where folks call home, so where on this planet do you call home?

Minnesota, or, the great frozen wasteland, depending on who you talk to ;)

I just purchased a plane that says "fulton tool company jointer plane"

Does it actually say "jointer" on the plane?

I ask because that's obviously a #4-sized smoother. A true jointer would be over twice as long and have a wider iron (22" long with 2-3/8 iron for a #7 for example)

Yup, woebegone!

I've seen a lot of ebay sellers do that, mislabel planes by supposed function and whatnot. Sargent did make a #7 size Fulton though. I've seen #3 through #7.
