View Full Version : Rails, Over The Top. (Pics)

Here is a rail job I just finished. This style rail is called "over the top" because the railing goes over the top of each post. While at first glance it may seem like a small detail, each post requires some type of cap. Each cap in turn must be attached to the rail, carved, and sanded to make a flush fit. It also makes for a much smaller margin of error because each fitting must fit tight on each post.
Another detail is the use of a 1/2 post against one wall and a 3/4 post at the end corner.
Thanks for looking.

Another fine railing, Richard. I can see how the "over the top" rail design forces closer tolerances and attention to details. The partial posts are also a cool touch. You've got this rail installation thing down cold, huh? Thanks for sharing the pics.

Great looking craftsmanship Richard. Do you come to TN to do this sort of thing? My next house (God help me) will need it...

Beautiful work, Richard. It must be very satisfying to look at something like that at the end of the day. You wouldn't happen to need an eager to learn apprentice, would you?
