I picked up a Grizzly G1531 6"X80" Edge sander locally for $75 but drove off without the two or three belts he had. I am guessing their shelf life may be expired anyway. What all around grits do you recommend? What's the finest grit you would recommend? I don't know what I will use it for yet but at the moment without belts it's nothing. Thanks in advance.

I try to keep a 100 grit on mine. Its too much trouble to buy a selection of grits and keep changing them out for me, but I don,t do production runs.

Try VSM,Klingspor or 3M. 80 grit is most commonly used for quick aggressive sanding. Up or down on grits depends on how you'll use the machine.

Most sanding belts have a 10yr shelf life. I blew 3-80 grits in 10 minutes but had the belts 10 years as I buy in bulk...

Klingspor for me. I have 80, 100,150 and 180 but I pretty much stick to 80 or 100 most of the time.

I buy from Industrial Abrasive. I have 120 grit on my sander most of the time but I use 80 grit for metal and 180 for end grain stuff.

Supergrit for very good pricing and very fast shipping also use their split paper roll for brush heads

I like 80 grit, and try to use zirconia since it lasts a long time. For our sander (6x108"), the only source I found is abrasiveresource, and decent prices, too.

Thanks for the replies thus far. It sounds like most stay in the 80-100 range unless there is a specific need. I will do a little online shopping and get some coming.

I've used IA and Supergrit; both are good and competitively priced. I normally keep an 80 grit belt on my Acme; a 60 and a 120 are hanging on the wall if faster stock removal or cleaner edges are need.
