:) I plan to build a small red oak box about a foot long. I want to make it all wood, no metal. The handles will be wood and I'll make some kind of wooden catch and use dowels to pin it together. I have most of it figured out except the hinges. 3/8 dowels in hinge blocks with the holes only drilled half way through seems like the way to go. I'm wondering if there are pictures or ideas that I can look at to finalize my plans.;)

Gary,

Woodpeckers has a hinge making kit (http://www.woodpeck.com/hingecrafterbitset.html#19) Never used it but the picture might give you some ideas.

There was a post a moon or so back on another forum....they had a commission to build a folding table that could have NO METAL in it.

They made hinges by making a sloppy box joint and bullnosing the members. Bore out a hole and drive a dowel through or a brass rod if you can have some metal.

There is a step-by-step photo project on making wooden hinges on Woodshopdemo's website. Here is the link...

Peter Lloyd's "Making Heirloom Boxes" book has a couple of examples, plus the details of a jig to round over the knuckles. (Of the hinge, not your hand! )
