This is a first for me. I mixed some metal work with wood. I had the metal power coated. The design is off the web slightly modified to match our current furniture. I had to make my own form to bend the 3/8" metal rod. The top is 2" meta tube. The bottom is 3/4" x 1/8" flat bar. I made a wood jig to weld it up. The hollow corner post are 5" joined with biscuits on the miters. I started it in November. The metal came back from the power coater today. Our old bed was a queen wood slat sleigh bed. My wife wanted something slightly different. My welding skills aren't the greatest but I think it turned out pretty good. The wife is thrilled so all is good. Thanks for looking.

That looks awesome! As a novice woodworker, I hope to be able to craft pieces that look that nice. Well done!

Nice work, Cary. And a cool design! I like the idea of combining other natural materials with wood--metal, glass, or stone. You've balanced the two real well so that one complements the other.

The reason I ask about the size is it's very hard to get visually pleasing proportions on a king sized bed. The post are just so far apart. You seemed to have accomplished a very pleasing look on a bed of this size. A paneled bed style usually does work better in this situation whereas a bed of this size with tall post looks very awkward. I also think the mix of wood and metal elements helps in this regard as well.

Well Done,

Ron

Ron,
I really can't take any credit for the design. My wife found a picture online. I worked out most of the measurements from the pictures. Sometimes I got some conflicting measurements from different pictures so I went with what I though would be best. The headboard and footboard are taller then I calculated because our mattress is thicker and would have been in the middle of the metal work of the footboard. I also wanted a little bit of room under the bed(8") to put some drawers later on. I was questioning some of my dimensions up until I put it together. It all worked out in the end.

Nice work. The metal really adds an interesting visual appeal.
