I read about electronic surface detection system in a 2011 article. It is supposed to help a rotary engraver keep an even engraving depth on uneven surfaces. I do not see it mentioned on any manufacturers website. Do any companies actually make engravers with this technology?

Most rotary engraver do have proximity sensors to detect surface materials being engraved.

I've seen several machines that use mechanical sensors, which may be considered 'electronic', but they're only intended to find an initial starting point, and assumes the material is flat and NOT uneven...

As for something like an automatic-ranging laser that will adjust cutting depth on-the-fly or something similar, I'd love to see one... But I've done okay without one for 40 years... ;)
