I just found an All steel Miller Fall mitre box with a 26x5 saw for $15. Looks complete except for missing guage bars. I plan it being mounted on permanent place in shop but would like to restore first- not to show room but to "good looking usable" shape. It's got no rust but all adjust stuck .
Woukd appreciate any direction to links discussing restoration and parts ( if there are any sources ).

thanks in advance.

Denny

ps its its been a good year for finding quality old tools. A couple months ago I got a Yankee 2101 bell brace for $5. All working fine .

Nice score....

My first question would be.... what parts do not work, or do not work well? I mean, there is the obvious to remove rust, but you have no rust. You did say that some things are "stuck". How far can you take it apart? I would generally look at those stuck parts to see if I could use some oil and steel wool to remove any "gunk" that might be causing a problem. Depending, you might even just spray the problem parts with something like WD-40, but without seeing it closer, that is hard to say.

I won't comment on the saw for now since I don't think that your question is aimed at that.

I think all the M-F boxes were good boxes. Nice get; $15 with saw is a fine, fine price.

Thanks all. I spend a lot of time on wkfine tools. Reall happy with price. I am taking it apart now will post pict when cleaned and back together. From what I read other than the all steel all parts are same as a 74 Acme .Saw needs a clean up and good sharpening. Sadly it was missing the diston ( if that what it is) saw nut. But measurements suggest it was.
According to the follow manual found on BadAxe is is a No. 1285 ( see page 5)

Not sure if this link works as hyperlink. This old 71 yo fallout not up on such things.

how have you all treated metal parts where the nickel playing is partially off? Just let it go as is.?

Nice. I have one just like it I got at a community rummage sale. I actually bought it for parts to fix an Acme Langdon I have that's a bit older. I'm pretty sure the saw is a Disston. PM me if you're interested in some parts or a replacement saw for yours.

How would it fit into your workflow. I have one setup in the corner of the shop, but I just don't use it. I make my breakdown cuts with my little panel saw, clean up one edge on the shooting board. Then after marking length with a knife, I crosscut it on the bench hook or held in the face vise with my little carcass saw and I'm done.

My question is, what cuts do all of you guys make with the miter box in your normal workflow? Final length cut and fit with shooting board? Or do you use it for your breakdown cuts?
