Last week I completed LOML's cherry armoire, as detailed here http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=23785. Several of you asked to see it after the finish was applied. I spent some time each day of the long weekend applying Formby's Tung Oil Finish (yes, I know it's not real tung oil). Then today, with great difficulty, I got it moved from my shop to its final resting place in our bedroom. I'm still waiting on some ball catches for the doors to arrive from Lee Valley so that's why the one door is not completely shut. Anyway, here it is in its final form and as you can see, it's also going to become a new favorite spot for games of hide-and-seek:rolleyes: . Thanks for looking.

It was nice before the finish, Jon, and now it's absolutely gorgeous. I have a feeling that piece will be in the family a long time. (I can see your daughter showing this picture to her grandkids someday, and pointing to the armoir in the corner and saying "that's the same one as in the picture".)

Fantastic piece, Jon. And it will only look better with age as the cherry develops its patina.

WOW Jon, very nice work. The curves must have been challenging. They came out great and make this piece classical. Thanks for posting the pics.

I have to say I liked the pictures of the unfinished unit, but the finished unit is really fantastic. You did a great job.

Whether it's 'real' tung oil or not, it's a fine looking piece of work. :)

Beautiful work and a nice design. I just spent 2 weeks in Switzerland where armoires are everywhere. The typical home or flat there has no closets, therefore the need for storage cabinets. While there, my wife began to think she needed one in our home to store some of her dishes, etc.

Where did you get the plans for this one?

Jon, you did a fantastic job! Nothing like putting a finished project in it's new home. :) Keep it up.

Simply Stunning! In my mind, it doesn't get any better than that. The best part is that it will look even better with age (just like me) :D.

Great job on. Truly an heirloom piece. How many steps in the finishing process were there to get the cherry to look like that.
take care,
John

I agree with the others have said...great finish. In addition, I think your selection of the boards tfor the curved pieces was great! the grain really complements the curves! A wonderful family heirloom.

take care,

The only finishing I did was to rub in three coats of Formby's Tung Oil Finish - not too imaginative, but I'm more than pleased with the results.

And, to answer Lou's question: no color was added.

Where did you get the plans for this one?

I purchased them from plansnow.com and I believe it also was originally published in Woodsmith 67.
