Received a 600 grit CBN wheel for the Tormek today. First impression is good. The wheel fits, it is very fast but controllable, running dry there was no heat build up. Tried it out on a newer Stanley 750.

Finished up the 750 on the soft ARK and Translucent Ark. The hollow grind was very even across as you can see in the photo.

On the Tormek it is slower than my 180 grit CBN on the low speed grinder as you would expect but not too slow. The finished grind is smoother also as expected and much easier to remove the grind marks with the stones.

More as I learn more.

How about the dust. Is it mostly captured in the now dry trough? I guess you could have an oil bath, but that would be messier than water om this scale.

I've been using a 600 grit on my Tormek too and I find the dust is only a problem when the tool is magnetized. When used in the trailing direction rotating away from the edge, the dust will stick to the magnetized tool and form a long annoying black tail. This doesn't hurt anything but it makes it hard to examine the edge while sharpening. An interesting thing is my lathe tools tend to get magnetized even when never put near a magnet.

My solution is to keep an old bulk tape demagnetizer hand and zap the tool as needed.

I read the some people do mount a strong magnet behind or under the wheel to catch the dust, in a plastic bag to make it easy to clean. I plan on trying this.

Where did you get a 600# CBN wheel for the Tormek? I have a 180 from D-Way, and I know they can special-order, but am wondering if somebody carries higher grits "off the shelf"?

Wood turners wonders website have them.

Ken said his Tormek wheels are made to order and might take a month or so for delivery. However, mine came quicker. Maybe call him and see if he has started keeping some in stock since it seems they are getting more popular.
