I'm building shaker style cabinet doors using 1/4" thick stub tenons. The panels will be veneered with 1/32" thick veneer on both sides. What 3/16" substrate material do you recommend for the veneered panels? It would be nice if I could glue the panels so the doors will feel more solid.

I also plan to glue the veneer with Unibond 800. Opinions here would be appreciated too!

Thanks!

Dennis

MDF. Do you have a vacuum press?

Yes, I'm using a vacuum press.

I didn't realize there is 3/16" MDF. Anyone know where I can get it in the south San Francisco Bay Area?

Use 1/4" and rabbet the back side so it fits into the rail/stile groove.

There is 5.2 mm plywood. That's often what you get if you look for quarter-inch hardwood-veneer plywood nowadays. 5.2 mm usually measures .18-.19" -- darn near 3/16". In the south Bay, go to MacBeath. A sheet of C4 maple costs about $30.

You can get veneer-faced 1/4" panels with a MDF core for around $50 a sheet; it measures a true 1/4" and is used for the exact application you mention. Most cabinet supply houses carry it. I have only got it in maple but I am sure that you can get it in other common species.

Also, using Space Balls will create a solid door with no rattle without the risk and hassle of gluing the panel to the frame. They are cheap and easy to use.

Yup, buy yourself veneered mdf and save yourself a lot of work. Any decent supplier will have most all the domestics in stock and yes, you can glue the mdf panels in place. Finding 3/16" material....I wouldn't want to have to find it:(

good luck,

Jamie,

I will check with MacBeath in San Jose tomorrow. Thanks!

IF (and I wouldn't) I were to attempt to veneer both sides of MDF for doors, my raw MDF 1/4 sheets come 7/32 thick. I'd make up the needed gap with a shim in my cutter stack.

You should be able to find just about any sheet stock you need for the job.
