For the last few years I have mostly been lurking here at SMC but I wanted to share a natural edged bowl I made for a client. This isn't the normal natural edge that most people think about but this came from a branch that broke off a special tree during a storm. The client dropped off the branch and wanted a bowl, a pen and a few ornaments for presents for family members.
Since the branch wasn't very big (7"-8"), I told him I would try to use the part of the tree that broke off since it was the biggest part and had some nice figure.
When I started I had planned on a small bowl (about 3"-4" tall by 8" across). Then as I was turning I had an idea http://www.penturners.org/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif: how about a 'natural' edge bowl? The natural part is actually from the crotch of the limb where it broke from the main tree trunk. While I've made a bunch of bowls, the natural edge was something new for me.
Instead of a shorter bowl with a plain rim, the 'natural' edge ended up making the bowl a little taller. And the odd shape of the limb also let me add a little height with a small foot. It's finished with about 4 coats of spray lacquer.
I love how it turned out and wanted to keep it for myself http://www.penturners.org/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif but I knew I couldn't do that since this was going to be a special gift to their family.
