I recently acquired a cast iron rocking chair. This is a wide chair with slats that are in sad shape. I plan to have it sandblasted and install new wider & thicker slats. (Mahogany) I would like to make it wide enough for two to enjoy. I have attached a photo. My question is what width? Any rules of thumb? I plan to put it on a farmers porch. Thanks in advance.

I adjusted your photo for you, Kevin.

A 3-cushion couch is around 84" in width and a two-cushion love seat is around 60" wide.

I'd tailor it to your situation and placement as to ideal dimensions but 60" is a good place to start.

It depends how much you like the person you want to sit next to:D

I have two cast iron love seats, like your rocker. The slats on both measure 48". That is plenty for two (large) people. Good idea to make the slats thicker. I have no idea how strong mahogany is, but I think most good models of this type bench are made of white oak.

Both of mine also have strap steel bracing for racking. Check catalogs and you will see it on pics.
