I am looking at a used air cleaner, it is a trion air boss. about 7 years old, on high it does 1800cfm my woodshop is 16x26x10. is this unit sized properly? I would assume I would leave it on low?

the recommended filer is this
http://www.grainger.com/product/AIR-HANDLER-24x24x4-2W239
which is a "merv 7"? filter, I found a chart saying merv 5-8 filters 3.0-10.0 um particle size. is this appropriate for wood dust?

if not could I put a different filter the same size in it to capture the finer stuff?

the air cleaner is 200$.

any advice is this what I should be looking for? are there better options?

I just bought a small (second hand) air cleaner this weekend (so I've been reading up on them). I would say (without running the numbers) that unit is oversized. But that's not bad if the physical size & noise is ok. I believe most of these things are rated by the fan alone- expect about 1/2 the rated CFM with (slightly dirty) filters in.
You can read about MERV values here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_efficiency_reporting_value

Most experts worry more about particles in the 1 to 0.3 micron size because they're the ones that can get deep into the lungs & the body has a hard time clearing. Generally speaking I would try find something in the MERV 10-12 rating, and the 'best' filters are in the MERV 15 class (i.e. Wynn Nano filters)

Having said all that, your first line of defence should be a dust collector attached to the tool.

Any air filter is better than none at all with regard to keeping your shop cleaner. The higher the Merv rating the finer the dust it will collect. However, higher merv filters will also reduce the air flow. That air cleaner will theoretically clean the air in your shop every 2-1/5 minutes on high. In reality some areas of your shop will be dead air that will never get cleaned by the air filter.

I have a dust collector, (2hp grizzly, stock bags, but I am planning on venting outside.) on light woodworking use how long will one of these filters last? are we talking if I am in my shop 2-3 days a week for 2-4hrs max, changing the filter once a month, once a year...

OK, I just realized that the filter I posted is the prefilter, the main filter is merv 13 or 14

does anyone know approximately how long either of these filters will last? I assume you can clean them a few times?

it looks like I can buy some cheaper higher merv prefilters off amazon

Filter life is completely dependent on how much dust is in the air, which can't be predicted accurately. My filter has a pre-filter which I change when it starts to look like sawdust. The secondary filter (which is still whites) gets changed every couple of years and I have only changed the bag filter once since I purchased it 15 years ago (it shows no signs of any dust). However, I am a hobby shop so sawdust production varies considerably. Your mileage will definitely vary.....
