Steve Ramsey (wood working for mere mortals on youtube) inspired me a bit to make a gift card holder. I'm supposed to get a gift this year for my wife's sister (we draw names every year), and I know very little about her, so she gets a gift card. At least this way she won't feel like it's totally impersonal and like I put no time into it at all! Made on the x-carve CNC machine.

I made a video to document my process, too.

Cool! A few years ago I made some wooden puzzle boxes to hold gift cards. Quick and easy to make with six identical pieces.

This is the prototype after assembly. The finished ones got rounded edges.

Challenging to open.

OK Dave. I give up. How does one open/assemble the box?

Jerry, five sides go together quite easily (no glue used at all) The sixth side wedges in and sort of snaps into place. The original design was such that the only way to open it was to destroy it but with a little bit of careful sanding, you can make it just loose enough so the last side can be removed again. The trick is to determine which side is the last one. :)

I drew it out in SketchUp and adjusted the size of the parts so a gift card would just fit into the box diagonally.
