Help with black/gold over poplar frame

My boss asking to make a frames for two painting. Best color she choose will be black distressed frame with some gold flakes.
Planning to make frame from poplar wood.
Please help me to how to do this colors on the frame.
Something like that only black color on the frame:326321

I got an effect like that (not on purpose) when I applied the gold leaf too soon, before the size had dried enough. I expect if you ask one of the gold leaf suppliers they can explain how to do it correctly.
