View Full Version : A hickory bowl **PICS**

An old customer of mine commissioned me to make her a bowl from a hickory tree that was felled in her yard from a recent tornado. I turned this today. With only 1 coat of oil applied so far - it looks pretty darn good (from an amatuer eye that is). Bowl is 10" dia, 4" deep. A few more coats of oil and some wax and it may turn out to be a "keeper".

In my more than 50 years, somehow I had never made anything from hickory. I now know why they primarily make hammer and axe handles from it (and burn it in BBQ grills).

It seemed like I had to sharpen my chisels an untold amount of times before I finally finished this thing.

This may be the last thing I make from Hickory.

<p align="right">stores the images on his web site & then uses HTML to have those images show here.

<p align="right"><b>That's why this reply looks so goofy - I used HTML</b> :D

and have a chance to get some myself. Thanks for the post. You're right, it does look like a "keeper." Keep up the good work, and keep the picts coming.

Not bad for a grouchy old codger!!

Seriously, Ken, nice work, and a beautiful piece of wood.

If you think it is hard now, wait until you try some that is totally dry.

Best Regards,

Mark

Hi Ken,

Glad to see you are still finding time for the shop! The bowl looks great and your customer should be real pleased.

I like the contrast of the heart and sap wood, makes for a very stunning piece.

Have a great day,
Lee

Looks good Ken. I'm like you that I have never used this old southern hickory for anything but smoking BBQ.
