I need to make an oval table top. If I know the overall length and the overall width of the oval that I need, is there a formula for the two nail and string loop method for drawing an oval that will determine how far apart to place the nails and what size loop of string I need. For the sake of argument lets say the board is 30" wide and 48" long and I want the oval to be 30 X 48 when I'm done.

I can't be pounding in a lot of nails to draw this oval.

I don't remember the formula, but I do suggest you do your oval on cardstock first and then just trace it onto your workpiece. It's a cheap way to faddle with things... ;)

I appreciate the rapid response and good links.

Phil, no need to make a pattern, I can lay one out fast enough. I may keep you in mind for future curves if I need some.

Why not make one of those router trammels that guide the router in a perfect ellipse?

A fella that I worked in a cabinet shop had a mechanical rig built to draw circles to ovals of any size.

I think I could figure out how to build one, but if there is a plan already for one out in cyberspace and easy to copy the plan, it would save some one from going bald from pulling their hair out!!!
