I picked up an old english molding plane ina box of stuff at a car boot sale. 1 1/4inch hollow, with obvious signs of rot to the escape side.

Is it junk? English beech is rare here in Aus, would it wise to salvage the good wood from unaffected parts of the plane?

If you want something that works (not decorative) you could dig out the rot, soak it with clear penetrating epoxy and fill the hole with epoxy putty. -Howard

Without pictures it is not possible for my opinion to have any relationship with reality.

If after cleaning and sharpening the plane can not cut the profile it was made to cut, then maybe salvaging is the proper course.
