Hey folks,

I would love to buy a set of standard hand saws, maybe in a smaller size like panel saws. I want a good rip, and a cross cut saw. I already own a nice set of back saws, namely a LN dovetail, and a set of three LV back saws that I just got and plan on trying out this weekend. I also have an order for a BadAxe Ruobo Beastmaster with a Cocobolo handle coming in a couple of weeks.

I watch Paul Sellers videos and he is resawing and easily rip cutting boards quickly and effortlessly I realize he is a pro, but I figure with a couple hours practice I can be resawing my own boards just as easily as he does. It's just sawing, how hard can it be? 😝

Seriously, does anyone know where I can look at some say 22 to 24 inch hand saws with some quality?

I very much appreciate the help.

Joe

I would recommend getting full saws rather than panel saws, to start with at least. The reasons are: full saws (24-26") are much more common and easier to find in good condition. Panel saws (20-22") are handy but you probably would not rip anything substantial with that short of a saw because you will probably will be sawing while kneeling on a saw horse or saw bench. I use panel saws while cutting smaller stock being held in a vise. The shorter saw is easier to manage in this case. If you must economize, then 24" saws are a good compromise.

Of all the tools I have collected, I have found more good saws at garage sales than any other class of hand tools. I guess everyone can still use a hand saw around the house whereas planes and hand drills are old-timey. Really good old saws that are refurbished are a worthwhile investment. They are still at least a hundred dollars less than new quality saws from, say Lie-Nielsen. Remember that you will want to learn to sharpen your own too. Saws from the better restorers sell very quickly so you had best buy when you see one. The best used saws out there are from Daryl Weir, but there are several other saw specialists that do excellent work. Where are you located?

I agree with Mike, ripping is made much easier with a saw where you can use your full stroke for every cut. The ideal length for a hand saw plate is determined approximately by measuring from your arm pit to your second knuckle with your arm stretched out in front of you. A longer saw would be helpful for thicker wood, but the extra length only contributes weight and a higher likely hood of hitting the ground/floor when cutting. This is a concern if you were sawing everyday, all day.
I am 5'-9" my ideal saw is a 24"inch. However 26" saws are far more common and my users all end up being 26". My favorite rip is a 6pt 28" Disston No.12. She's a big girl, but man does that baby fly!
