Here is a face grain turned walnut box I made for a friend. It is about 5" in diameter and a little less than 3" tall. The grain on the inside of the bottom is quite pretty IMHO.

Looks great Mike! What kind of finish did you use on it?

Multiple coats of varnish, BLO mixture thinned and allowed to soak in and then burnished dry on the lathe with paper towels. Used a non-abrasive pad between coats to polish it nice and smooth and shiny....

Big Mike,

Another wonderful piece. I really love the finish that you acheive on your bowls & boxes.

Mine is still doing wonderfully and holding up real well. Thanks again - it's a real masterpiece.

Another beauty as always Mike, but as with all your boxes both turned or flat, I think they need to be touched to appreciate them to the degree they deserve!:)

Wonderful box Mike. The grain is beautiful and how you picked it out for that lid to come out the way it did is really cool.

Mike-

How much do you thin your BLO with? And what do you thin it with?

Jason, it is not just the BLO. It is BLO and Varnish mixed and both thinned about 40% with mineral spirits. Nice and thin, flood it on, let it soak, wipe it off and buff it dry. On the lathe I buff it dry while the lathe is running....

Sorry, Mike. Thought I added my .02 to this. That is beautiful! You're execution is outstanding.

The only thing better than Walnut, finishwise, is Cocobolo. Talk about some pretty stuff. The only problem is the price.
