Using alder and maple has been the best so far. Walnut and Lyptus was too hard and it splintered. I've been using 3/32" strips from Colorado heirloom (http://www.coloradoheirloom.com/Strips.htm).

I've found that Duco Cement has worked pretty good for holding it to the metal. Time will tell though.

I etched through the back to expose bare wood, but I'm trying one tonight without doing that. That Duco Cement seems to melt the finish anyway.

I've come up with a sort of mold too (CDR saved in Ver 9 (http://www.shaddysengraving.com/laser/BarretteTemplateVer9.cdr)).
Also has a pattern for the wood part.

Take the pieces and sandwich and glue the like pieces together. Then you'll be able to clamp the wood strip between them and set the curve. If you use prefinished wood, you can't soak it to bend easier as it will screw up the finish. You might use bare wood and finish later though. Probably just depends on the work involved and the money you can get for them.

I came up with this idea when a friend of mine asked me if I could make a barrette out of an etched strip of wood glued to the metal barrette that said Got Pictures? on it for a scrapbooking party (I told you before I lacked creativity :D). I would be interested in seeing what other people did with this, and if it sparked a different idea.

Shaddy , Great project!!
Try marine silicon sealant to glue it , its super strong and will fill in the gaps as well as aving a little play.
