I stumbled across a large section of walnut today. Close to 3 feet long and 32 inches in diameter. I split it longways to get it on the truck, barely. It has a burl on one side and I'm wondering if anybody knows of a video or other teaching aid to help me get the best blanks out of this monster. I've been turning for years but I've never run across a piece this big and usable. Any suggestions would be welcome.

There's others that are under urban wood for woodturning. Just get the pith out of the blanks, and seal the ends with paint or AnchorSeal.

Large NE walnut fruit bowls are nice and they sell well. I can't seem to keep them as there is a lot of smaller bowls and limited amount of large ones in a tree. Have fun and good luck.

I figure there are four 16 inch bowls in the blanks Fred, plus the burl. I'm considering a coring tool because walnut logs this size don't come along very often.

There are even more 12" bowls in the log. Were it me, I would plank it into 4+" thick boards and turn smaller bowls from it, saving the outside area for natural edge bowls. Most say that bowls over 12" do not sell well. Cheaper than buying a coring system unless you just want one anyway. You could easily get a large salad bowl and several server bowls for a set.

Just a thought.

I had the same thought John but this is sort of a gift for a very old friend that is running short of time. I'm going to make one of Osage Orange and the walnut.. Both trees came from his farm. And yes I do want a center saver.

Cut the burl off, anchor seal it and let it dry on its own. Depending on what you have, cut the log above and below the burl and bandsaw it. Or bow saw it. I'd use a chainsaw as a last resort. This is what I've done with a couple basketball sized burls of various species.

Agree with John about 4" planks.

Looks like an older style but basically new cutters. I'd buy it myself, but not in my budget at moment.
