Hello,
Just wanted to stop by and say hello. I recently started woodworking and have been learning as much as I can, with a lot of help from older posts on here.

Here are my first attempts,

Howdy Ken and welcome to the Creek. Your location isn't listed in your profile, where do you call home?

Besides my curiosity about member locations, I am also curios about all the drawings on the wall.

Your work looks pretty good for a newbie.

Thank you Jim, I'm in the Hillsboro/Portland Oregon area.

I'm a Tattoo Artist by trade and the drawings are from work. I made the first box to replace a beat up cigar box that I was using to hold my art supplies.

Wow, not only do you live close (relatively) Candy, my wife, loves many things of the tattoo world.

Did you use anything besides glue to hold the bottoms of your box and carrier?

At the moment, just glue, at least till I find a better way.

Welcome to the forum....

Those look pretty good. My first attempts were not nearly as good. Nice looking boxes on all accounts.

I have used just glue a few times on similar items with no problems or failures. The biggest concern I think would be if there was unequal wood expansion that caused a joint to fail. I have been repeatedly told that a good glue joint is stronger than the wood itself. I still feel skeptical about it (with my limited experience), but I still do it sometimes. well, when I edge join boards to make wider boards, I use only glue with nothing additional. To date I have not had any failures, but they are also not in high stress environments

Nice, useful boxes. If you are already fitting up hinges, you are miles ahead of the curve. I hated hinge mortising, especially until I learned to drop the $ on good, quality hinges as opposed to whatever they had hanging on the wall at the Borg. And then I found this thing called a Vix bit. Welcome.

A larger tote, either a classic tool tote (like the one Roy Underhill carries in the title sequence of his show), or you could do something along the lines of these.

While it's hard to argue against anything beer, the tool tote idea seems like a good way to go. Jim Tolpin has solid directions for one in his The New Traditional Woodworker, an all-around great book, especially for us newbies. The book has some other good, shop projects as well, and I plan on jumping in on the tote after I knock out some Xmas gifts.

Oh, and separated but related, a Japanese toolbox in the style of Odate is fun and handy. Here's Wilbur Pan's, with directions (http://giantcypress.net/post/44613074898/tool-box-after-odate). I'm going to add a sliding till in mine, which should make it 10,000% more helpful. (I'm bias, though. Any shop-related project, from mallets to planes to screwdriver handles, is always a good idea to me.)

Whatever you pick, please post it here. It's always encouraging to see what other beginners are up to.

Thanks for the ideas, I think I have something in mind now. I'll post it once I have something worth posting.
