I was browsing an antique store on my lunch today and I ran across this plane. I have a couple this size so I don't want to grab it unless it is something special. I think I have it dated as a 16 but I am not sure.

Probably a very common type 19 from the 50's. Looks like a good candidate and worth the money being asked. Have to see the frog to tell what type it is. If the handles are stained hardwood its a 16. Its hard to tell in the pictures if they are rosewood or stained.

More pictures would be needed before I'd consider it. How does the sole and the mouth look? How about the tote? The iron and frog? Appears to be in pretty rough shape. IMHO this doesn't qualify as anything special. Not to say it isn't an okay buy, but I don't think it is a steal at that price.

If your existing No. 5s are good planes, that should be enough: one to use and one to replace the first one if you drop it.

Thanks everyone, that is what I needed. I am going to pass on this one.

Good plan.

$28 isn't a bad price for a #5, but I would prefer one from before the ogee style frog. That is just my preference and shouldn't affect anyone else's choice.
