I've noticed that there's a plethora of members here with a join date of 2003.
Of all the online forums I belong to, I believe this one is unique in that respect.

People tend to drift in and out and before you know it, the whole board has turned over and there's only a couple of "old timers" left.

I'm curious how many here go back to the beginning - or very close to it?

LOL! I'm interested for one thing because I was more or less just asked to leave a forum that I joined in 1998 the day it started and was the only one left still posting. The whole forum had changed so much it wasn't even close to what the original had been.

2003 is when the Creek went live. I was part of Badger Pond back in the day and was talking with Wayne Miller about taking over Badger Pond but I simply couldn't muster up the money. Instead, Keith took it over at Hampton Roads Online and we all decided to call it Sawmill Creek. Some of us have been around since just before "the creek" started flowing. :)

I too joined after Badger Pond went dry. It was February 2003. As you can see from my number of posts, I'm not exactly prolific in spite of being a moderator.

I never participated in or knew about The Badger Pond until AFTER I joined SMC.

We're still chugging along here.... Joined date, upper right. :)

I joined in 2005, about the same time I started woodworking. This site has been and still is a great resource to learn.

If you hover over the persons name and look at the bottom left of the screen...the number is the sequence of when they joined. I'm 131.

Been hanging around since November of '06.
Started looking for a laser back then and found the Creek a valuable source of excellent and correct information.

Man, you're old, Dave!

I'm kind of surprised to realize I've been here since 2005. Huh. Of course life happens to all of us. I've been very active, and then been very inactive, at different times.

And I'm 270.& only 122 posts in all that time!!!
That's awesome!

I really envy people that listen a lot and say something only when it's real important to them.

I tip my hat to your self control!

BTW - I can't believe I've been here going on 9 years myself!

A couple of reasons for the posting rate. When I originally joined, I was riding Nortel down as the the Telecom bubble burst (I joined Nortel when they had 106,000 employees, and was asked to step off the bus as the passed 30,000 on the way to zero). Then landed a faculty position at the largest Catholic university in Texas, which keeps me amazingly busy. I read the creek all the time, but try to only chime in when I have some expertise in the area.

Honestly, I was surprised when I checked and I was #270. For the record, I believe I had a similar posting rate on Badger Pond.

Joined 02-13-2003. Looks like I must be ole #102! I have found the Creek to be a valuable resource. I don't post much, but I visit almost every day. I really appreciate the courteous attitude promoted on the site and the wide variety of experienced folks who so generously share their knowledge and wisdom. I'm number 2.

I registered in the early morning of February 11th, 2003 just after the software was installed on our server at Hampton Roads Online by my System Administrator at the time who was number 1.

We still have a large number of our Top 500 Members who all joined in the first week I think. I can get our current Server Administrator to post some registration statistics if anyone is interested.

Here is a graph of member number vs join date for folks who have responded to this thread. (Working on getting my post numbers up :):)) I first thought exponential growth, but as I put more points in it looks piecewise linear with a major rate change on Sept 20, 2006 going from about 6 per day new to about 43 per day.

I was a Badger Pond fan/member too. Unfortunately, I made a long side trip to a particular magazine's site and didn't discover SMC until a few years ago. I just want to say that Keith, the Mods and you long term members/contributors did a GREAT job preserving the spirit of The Pond.

Frederick,

Thanks for the kind words, we try our best to maintain the same atmosphere that made Badger Pond so successful. I tried to purchase Badger Pond but my offer was refused, it would have been a valuable asset to keep the pond alive rather than see it archived which is why I am so strict here about threads being placed in the proper forum so we can keep them available for everyone and keep the pictures and file attachments available as well.

#159 checking in. Joined 2-15-2003. As I recall, Badger Pond shut down on March 1 of that year. There was a HUGE lag time right at the end as a bunch of people were refreshing constantly and trying to get in the very last post.

I am curious as to what the precipitous event was in about October of 2006 that caused the sudden surge in the rate of new registrations. I can't recall anything specific.
