I wonder how he figured out that it might be the Kid? You have to have a fairly deep background knowledge of obscure stuff to even say, "This is worth following up."

My first thoughts exactly Bill. When I realized the first image was a cropped enlargement from a larger image, I wondered what made the man decide to investigate. My best guess: that bizarre hat.

That distinctive hat makes me think of Billy the Kid but I'm not sure I would have had the same thought without knowing it was him first.

After looking at this a little more here is another link with some more details:

The person who found the old photo is described as a collector. So maybe while we are looking at rust that other person across the room looking at old photos knows something and is building up their collection of images.
