Someone posted this link to a YouTube video in another fourum. It's a bit long but I found it interesting.

Almost forgot to include the link! (Hope it works) ( I also forget if we're allowed to post links… Hope so, otherwise this thread will have no meaning)

At one point the guy briefly mentions that he's not too worried about cut quality because he takes whatever he cuts to his sander for finishing. I assume this implies that sharpening this way impacts cut quality but I'm not sure.

What do you guys think about this method? I think it might work for my small band saw mill where are cut quality is not that critical.

I'm not sure about blades sharpened like this as far as cut quality for general work in the shop goes.

Would you try sharpening a blade like this for use in your shop?

Curious....

I've sharpened a few bandsaw blades over the years with mixed results. The best I ever got was making a rig for my chainsaw sharpener to touch up a resaw blade. The problem arises with losing some set in the blade when resharpened. I suppose you could reset the teeth but at that point you may as well buy a new blade.

At one time I sent blades to Cincinnati to be sharpened at Buckeye saw on automatic sharpeners. It was cheap - $3 for my 17ft blades. They came back looking like new. The problem was, the tips are impulse hardened and the sharpening process grinds off the hard part and the remaining steel just couldn't "cut it".

I sharpened a few bandsaw blades and got great results, the easiest way for me has been to just lightly grind the tip of each tooth using a Dremel and a cutting disc, while the band is on the saw, it's very quick (less than 10 min.) for a 93.5" long blade.

I've done the same as Ken. You just touch the tooth briefly.

Matthias Wandel has an article with a couple videos about sharpening his bandsaw blades: http://woodgears.ca/bandsaw/sharpening.html
John Heisz also whipped up a little jig to sharpen them while on the saw: http://www.ibuildit.ca/Workshop%20Projects/Jigs/band-saw-blade-jig-1.html
I haven't tried either one yet, but maybe someday if I'm really bored. :)
