View Full Version : Crab Lock Install

I purchased a sweet crab lock from whitechapel to install on my anarchist tool chest I've been building. I ran into a snag and need some advice. The top of the lock sits flush on the carcass edge. The screws that came with it are round slotted. This prevents the lid from shutting. Any suggestions? Some of my ideas: Buy flathead slot screws, drill holes in the lid for the screw heads to fit, lower the crab lock to make the screws flush but which might leave fragile edges around lock mortice and prevent lock mate for reaching far enough. Whatcha think?

Don't know what the Schwarz did to alleviate the problem but his article on the Whitechapel lock shows the round screws

Good grief, one of those locks costs more than the wood needed to make the chest!

A simple solution is to make small holes in the lid where the screws end up hitting so they fit up inside the lid a bit when the chest is close. If you do a clean job drilling the holes and maybe chamfer the edges then I would expect this to look fine.
