Hello Friends, First time uploader, see if it works..

I am looking at getting into turning, and a friend has these machines with a pile of tooling he would like to sell. They were his dads, and has no idea of value. Anyone recognize them, and help me with an assessment of quality, and price? There is a pile of belts for the sander on the blue lathe as well.

Thanks in advance,

Sheldon

Every once in awhile there is a photo that is not working, right next to another photo with the same camera that is working. Last resort - take a couple more pictures of the same thing and try them.

These are the machines. Idea of value? Any opinions would be great. The pic I posted earlier is the front view. The Blue machine has a DC variable speed drive. seems pretty heavy duty. As you see from the side view, there is a sander attached to it... also comes with a pile of belts. The original owner has passed away. The tools are plenty and very high quality as well. Thanks for the input,

Best

Where are you located Sheldon? Both of those are UK machines. Would love to see them.

Brian,

I am in BC Canada. I thought they were a long way from home.

I sure wish I had the chance to meet the original owner. He has some MONSTER TURNINGS

Hey Sheldon. I too am in BC, in the Delta area. If we are close I would be pleased to take a look and see if I could give you some idea of value.

The first picture is a Graduate bowl lathe and they are very rare. I don't have a dollar value but if you sell it on ebay it will get snatched up quickly. The blue machine is a tube lathe of some kind and in my mind not worth a lot.

I have seen the Union Graduate bowl lathes sell from $500-$800, maybe a bit more in the U.S. It's an excellent lathe but not common in the states. The Record looks like one of their heaviest. We often look down on "tube lathes" as Craftsman and others has some that were pretty cheap. However those are solid steel bars, not tubes. That design seems to be more accepted in the UK. It is a highly capable lathe. The previous owner sounds like quite an accomplished turner.

If you were further south I would be interested in the Union. The swing on that Record looks pretty large itself and probably is a beefy lathe. I think tube lathes got a bad rep in the 70's when everyone was getting into the tool business and cheap tools were being imported from Taiwan.

Thanks guys. Would 1000 bucks for both machines and the tooling be too much of a low ball offer?

Seems like a starting point. Your friend may want to know its going to a good home. That has value too.

Depends on what all tooling is available. If you are the buyer then I'd ask what price range they are looking for. If he says $1500 then offer the $1000 and see how he responds and be ready to offer more.
If you are the seller then let us see more pics of what you have as tooling, chucks, faceplates, etc add up quickly..

Do the two handguns come with the lathe? That might bump the price a bit. A thousand would not be out of line for the Union Graduate in good working order so if you could get both for that much, it would be a very good deal.
