Got these done about a week and a half ago, but am just now getting around to posting them. Both are elm--it's what I have to turn with right now. The first one is fairly small, about 5.5"x2". It started out with more of spittoon-type shape, but the blank was somewhat checked to begin with, so I ended up having to take off the rim. There are still a couple small cracks in it, but as we all know, those are CHARACTER.

The next bowl was what I thought would be a neat form to try, but as I was nearing completion, my wife walked into the shop and said, "Hey! That looks like a dog dish!" Grrrrrr. As soon as she said it, I knew she was right. Anyway, it's about 9"x3.5", and a little heavy.

Of course, I still need to do something about the bottoms of these two, but that involves making a compression chuck--and I'm out of round-tuits at the moment.

I can't wait to start working with some other type of wood, as the elm is definitely full of headaches--end-grain tearout being the biggest one.

I know what you mean about getting some tear out. I tend to get that too on elm, wet maple and walnut. I tried to do a large hollow form today with a piece of walnut, starting from the end. I managed to get the outside done pretty well, but when I started the inside ... oops. It ended up as nut bowl (I'll post picts). So hang in there, looks like you've got a good start ... and hey, let your wife know there's money in pet items! Keep up the good work and keep posting picts.

Hi Jason,
Those look great! I've got a chunk of Elm that I got at Terry Hatfields BBQ last year, but I've never turned any of it. I like the grain pattern and I think you just gave me the incentive to get busy.

Keep Turning 'em out, and thanks for sharing.

Both look nice. I like the shape of the first one.

Sorry, but I agree, the second one looks like a dog bowl. A very nice dog bowl though.

You guys sure do make me wish I had a lathe. I would like to make a couple of collection plates for my church.

Oh well, it's on the list of wants just down a bit.

Jason, Jason, Jason.....

See what happens when you get around folks who have a turning Jones??? I can see it has hit you full force!!

That's a great thing! I believe you are finding out just how many things you can do with a lathe. It really allows the creative side out and you never....ever drive past a fallen tree or cut up logs with the ennui you had before[B]

Have fun and experiment often!!

Looking Good!

Your turning skills are progressing nicely.

Don't know if you realize it but the bottom side of your dog dish looks like you could trim the edge down some & it would be a decorative sombrero :D Sort of like those really cool cowboy hats a few people turn!

Yes, Tom, the sombrero similarity came up as well.

Kurt- the turning bug did finally bite and infect. Now I have yet another distraction from my already limited time and energy.

Don- The thing about getting a lathe is that it clears your list of "wants" and replaces it with a whole new set.

Lee- Try it, you'll like it!! Actuall, it's probably partially that I'm a beginner, but the elm is fairly hard and does have a fair amount of tearout. But I agree on the grain--I had always though elm was a junk wood until I turned some!

Ron- I think that the dog dish is the only thing I have turned so far that came out even close to the original, intended size, if you know what I mean!

Thanks for all the comments, compliments and feedback, guys!
