Right, I know you guys love a laser related kickstrater project, and this is just to funny not to post up, firstly I have no connection with these guys, I mean frankly they mean business, they use lasers with smoke machines and lab coats, they have big complex formulas on their white boards, they ARE NOT PLAYING. check this out https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/skarp/the-skarp-laser-razor-21st-century-shaving
I had to check it wasnt April 1st, but its not, and even more amazing they have raised nearly $3'000'000 (yeah seriously). You could not make this stuff up (well you can as they have)
On a side note I'm raising funds for my new project, the 'time machine toaster' it will enable you to have breakfast and if your running late you can simply dial back a few minutes/hours or years, i hope to ship around the start of 2016, but the good news is as soon as i have a working prototype i will simply come back with all my data to this date, so there will be no wait at all, Early bird investors can have have one for $39.99 each

Correction, you can have one for $189!

Very cool, I saw it the other day as well. For $39, I'd do it, for $189, I'll wait until the Chinese make one with a glass tube and a chiller for $23 ;)

I'll wait for the Skarp Quattro.

No $39.99 is for my kickstarter 'the time machine toaster' not the shaver, i can assure you i have more chance of shipping a product than they do, this is another kickstarter that will have lots of disappointed backers.

I "thought" that one of KickStarter's rules was that you had to have a working prototype, and that's what set it apart from Indiegogo.

Yup, here is what they say; kickstarter.com/rules/prototypes (https://www.kickstarter.com/rules/prototypes)

"Projects that involve the development of physical products must feature explicit demos of working prototypes."

If you are a KickStarter member you can report the campaign as making a false claim.

Well, I already know your toaster (and time travel) won't work. If either did, you'd been here 2 hours ago with it...:p

Chanting - "what do we want? Time Travel! when do we want it? that's irrelevant..."

Feh. I may not be a neander in the wood shop but I am at the shaving mirror: straight razor, strop, mug, and brush.

Having a few problems with the toaster, I recently sold one to a guy in 2047 and he claims one of his kids got an iphone 236s stuck in it and burnt their fingers, his was pretty grumpy but i think the main reason is he is still waiting for laser razor to arrive.

there is a video of a prototype 'working' pretend you can't see the wire ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGiAS8yYHjs

If that's the prototype video and I was there market director I would NOT be hosting that publically, I believe the wire is the medium, in which the laser is traveling

oh dear

This time next week we will have the "GlowSkarp" Laser hair removal system, ok you may burn your face off and incinerate next doors cat but that's because you don't understand the way it works and at least with the built in face fungus filter you won't notice the smell of immolated household goods. Please note we do have a no questions asked 25 second refund policy.

After that...it's your problem not ours :)

Oooh! I could combine this with my current project.....laser tat removal! Got a tattoo you want removed? No longer forever in love with your sweetie, Mehitabel? Come over to my shop in Seattle and I will use my 80 watt Chinese CO2 laser to remove your forehead tattoo and your neck hair as well!!!! Bothered by unsightly and overly generous chest and back hair? My Ray Fine Technology system can take care of that for you and remove those death's head tats from your ear lobes! Not happy about your ear lobes in general? Well do I have a deal for you!

This could be my ticket!!!

Thanks for the idea everyone!!! Glad I got the model with the pass through doors! I can take a person of any length! Woohoooooooo!

<grin>

It's not a laser but a high voltage / low current device very similar to an "electric fly swatter" in operation. The leading wire is charged with a high voltage and it grounds back to the base of the razor as a circuit through the hair. As there is only a short distance between the wire and base there may or may not be a shock from the minuscule current running through the hair / skin.

So a bit like stringing a wire on an X26 Taser pistol then Guy :)

No competition Dave, remember brother I have a 7kW laser ;) I'll corner the market by removing hair while the customer is in their front room , windows? no problem, walls?...not an issue just WHAM and the hair is gone (along with their house, their neighbours house and all their worldly possessions) ;)

Now Dave,

You need to leave some small niches for the rest of us to fill. Otherwise I will end up on the streets of Seattle, hanging out under streetlamps hawking little 2D dinosaurs lasered out of lined loose leaf paper or some other horrible fate!

Here's a "demo" that they posted. Note the "we can't really show you it working because we need to protect our (claimed to be patented) IP." theme.

Just so you all know I have a time traveling toaster. I just need 3 million to finish it. Right now It only goes forward in time 1 second at a time. But buy next year I plan to have it go back. The prototype works amazing.

I see a foam cutter in action, it looks like a hot wire melting the hair, no smoke just smell of burning hair...
When it is OK to sell "laser sharp" shaving blades, I guess this foam cutter can be called a laser blade

Don't be to hasty Dave, if you carefully watch the video you can see someone using an actual soldering iron to carry out some kind of soldering! A company with such resources surely should be taken very seriously indeed. I think the investors 3m is in very safe hands

Well. Glowforge was featured in the business section of the Seattle Times today (10-5) they gave him about 1/3 of the page plus another half page deper in the section.

Interesting.

......this is an add on. Appears Glowforge is based here in Seattle (SoDo area if you are near enough to visit). That explains the large article they got in our paper. The article really leans hard on the 3d aspect of their name. And the large photo of the Ceo shows him holding a rather large contoured globemade of cut corrugated cardboard which implies to me that they made it on the machine rather than assembling a gazillion flat pieces that were each made on the machine. And the article spends a lot of time looking at its competetitors.... The actual 3d printers out there. Seems rather misleading to me but everyone in the media seems to be buying the comparison. This is going to be interesting to watch.

Hi Dave: I can understand that some can't wrap their head around a name, but the intention is there to convey to someone that you can make dimensional pieces. Most of the small desktop 3D printers have a small build platform and take forever to print, but a great feature is that you can print parts which can be assembled into larger things. Some folks seem to short circuit over verbage, but it does not change what it is capable of producing such as the giant earth lamp in the pic, IMHO.

Here's more info for those interested.

Hey Matt!

Dont get me wrong. Indo think they have some neat ideas in this product. And if it performs close to their advertising i can see folks who might not consider something like this buying it. But i also see issues in safety from what little i know of this thing. And i also have some problems with the 3D claims. Slapping 3d on the name implies some things to me that is not actually what the product does. An exacto blade in the hands of a Kirigami artist is a 3d tool as well under this definition. That is me however. I really am intrigued by this and where it goes and how folks end up using it versus the initial ideas based on the marketing.

I am actuallyintrigued enough to consider popping down to SoDo sometime to check them out. I have no intention of buying. Just curious and they are quite close to me. Maybe 8 miles by bicycle? If i do go i will report back!

Excellent! What I mean by that - I'm glad to see them holding a popular campaign to the rules. Requiring a working prototype is what sets Kickstarter apart.

Their advertising is exactly as honest as mine would be if I tried to sell my CNC router by calling it a 3-D keepsake box printer.
