View Full Version : Desk in Walnut

Here is a desk that I made in walnut. My wife designed exactly what she wanted, and I built it. She wanted something very simple. I think the legs are a little on the chunky side, but its what she wanted!!

The legs are veneered with some 1/8" shop cut walnut. Each leg uses one board, so the grain matches all around them. I hand cut all of the joinery on this desk (a first for me!). The legs are joined to the top and bottom pieces with through mortises. The two aprons use mortise and tenons. There are two support pieces that tie the two ends together that are done with half lap dovetails. I was concerned with racking on this desk, and after I put it together I'm still a little concerned. I would not want to slide it across the floor, but I think it will be fine with normal use.

I flattened the top on my 18/36 Delta drum sander.

The desk is finished with 4 coats of Arm-r-Seal.

I always enjoy looking at people's finished projects, so I thought I'd post one. Thanks for looking, and any and all comments/criticisms are welcome.

Man, I love that design!

- copying your pics for future reference. - Though I think I'd use solid Walnut.

Did you actually hand-chop your mortices? I've done that before, (pig stickers) but after 2 projects I decided that I could live with myself if I pre-drilled most of it. :o

Thanks all!

I did hand chop the mortises. I drilled holes for some, but found it was just as easy not to.

I considered doing the legs out of solid walnut, but didn't have anything 3" thick and don't like the look of laminations for this project.

Here's (https://www.dropbox.com/s/yphesjm3jwwg4pl/Anne%27s%20Desk.skp?dl=0) the sketchup file in case anyone wants it. It doesn't have any of the joinery, but that's pretty self-explanatory to add.
