How do I make drawer slips?

The mention of drawer slips in another thread reminded me that I need to something similar. I'm building a case of small drawers to hold screws. The drawer bottoms are set into grooves but I want to add removable dividers. My plan is to have the dividers held in place by an applied groove that is shaped just like a drawer slip.

While I *could* make this with a power router, I want to do it by hand using my little record plow plane. I have an idea how I might do this, but I'd really like some advice before I get started.

Making the groove is the easy part. I'm mostly concerned with how to hold the piece in order to cut the groove, bevel the sides and perhaps cut it to width. To those with some sticking experience, is this similar?

If my idea of what you are doing is correct, it might be easier to saw then chisel these partition holders.

Using the plow plane would likely entail going all the way across the drawer sides.

You might also consider the idea of making rebates (rabbets) along the top of the drawers to hold small tills or boxes of screws.

This is perhaps a simpler device than you imagine. 5/8" wide, 3/8 deep with a 3/16 x 3/16 groove. This is then cut to a bit less than the inside height of the drawer and glue to the center of the drawer front and back. A 3/16" divider drops into the divider to make 2 compartments.

These are small drawers. 2 x 6 x 7 1/4"

Great article Derek. Thanks! The picture of the drawer slips tells me you are making them about the way I imagined. Groove and form them on a wider piece and then cut them to depth.
