I'm using some black ash sapwood for a project and it has some nice purpleish tones, which I'd like to preserve. I tested both oil and water based finishes knowing the result beforehand, and they both darkened the brown tones and negated most of the purple.
I heard once that they only way to get a finish that doesn't darken the natural color is to spray white shellac in such a fine mist and from a distance, that the surface tension of the particles doesn't break upon touching the wood, and sits on top. Several such incredible finesse coats are needed.
Any other ideas?
