Here is a little flat grained turned box from walnut that I got a little creative with and inlaid a piece of birdseye maple in the lid.

This box is about 4 1/2" in diameter and a little over 2 1/4" tall.

Nice box, nice shape and form. The inlay was a good idea and sets it off.

Very nice Big Mike!!!!

But I have to ask......how do you cut the inlay to fit so nicely? I've tried my hand at inlay and my fitting isn't that good "yet". Any tips that you could offer someone trying to learn the technique?

Dennis, the piece for the inlay is cut before the inlay recess is cut. I decide about the size of the inlay that I want in the lid and cut that to size on the lathe. I set that piece aside. Then it is just a matter of turning a recess to fit. That is best done very carefully, sneaking up on the fit until the inlay piece fits snugly. Once the fit is established, a little glue and voila you have an inlay. Finish shaping the lid and sand everything smooth, apply some finish and you have a finished box. Try it, it is not as hard as it seems. Take your time cutting the recess as it is easier to make the hole larger than it is to make it smaller.... :p ;) :D

Very nice, Mr. Stafford! One of these days you'll have to make that run to Arkansas again and stop by here and give me a lesson or three...:D
