I recently bought a ~3500sq ft building for my shop. I am an upholsterer. Custom car interiors involve a lot of woodworking. The first photo is my attempt at drawing the building in SketchUp. I call the areas of the shop bays, as shown in the photo. Originally I wanted to remove the wall between bays 3 and 4. Turns out that wall is supporting the roof, so it stays. Bay 4 will be divided up into three rooms - 16x10 finishing with ventilation, 16x9 dirty room for grinders, sand blast cabinet and MIG welder, and the remaining 16x9 nearest bay 5 will have machine tools and metal working machines.

Bay 3 is where the woodworking room will go. I plan to build wall directly under the overhead beam between 2 and 3 to divide off the wood shop room. The orange air compressor in the rear right of the photo will be relocated. Plan is to build a room for the Cleavue in that spot. It will be outside of and adjacent to the wood room. All of the shelving on the right of the photos will be moved and the room dedicated to woodworking. I do a lot of router work and will have a few router stations. Thinking I'll build a long miter station along the wall where the shelving currently resides.

So, the bay is 16' wide and 28' long. I put the bandsaws, Unisaw, jointer and planer in places I think they would work well. I will probably roll the jointer and planer into position when I'm milling lumber and toward the wall the rest of the time. I have two Festool MFT's with vacuums and boom arms that I use often. They will be on the opposite side of the room from the bandsaws. While I mostly do upholstery related woodworking, I have a lot of shop projects and aspirations to make some furniture in the future.

I know I have a good bit of room to work with. I welcome any thoughts or feedback on the layout or anything else for that matter.

Thanks!

Very nice space Steven. I'd want a long infeed/outfeed on the large bandsaw to rip strips such as boat inwale/outwales. Perhaps that is a door between bays 3 and 4 allowing just that function. Dust collection?

Bill, there is a door at the far right of the photos between bays 3 and 4. I put the 20" bandsaw there thinking I could resaw with outfeed going into bay 4.

Clearvue system just arrived. It's going in bay 2 against the far wall.

Thanks for the comments!
