I have just turned a few boxes and would like to do more. When looking at the Packard diamond side cutting scraper, they claim it is used for "establishing a clean square corner" at the bottom of lids and box bottoms. Yet when I look at its shape, the angle formed by the front and the left side of the tool is more than 90 degrees. So I can't see how one could cut a "square corner" with this without regrinding that angle to 90 degrees. Can someone enlighten me here about this?
Thanks,
John

I believe you can use the side of the scraper to form a flat side, then move or adjust the angle of the scraper to form a flat bottom. The intent is not to scrape the side and bottom simultaneously when forming the corner, but rather make the two straight surfaces come together separately to form the corner.

That makes sense in my head, hopefully my explanation is halfway clear too. I have a square scraper and the above is still more or less how I use it to form corners in the bottom

Also, if there is a return on the rim so that the rimm is smaller in diameter than the body of the box, you have enough angle on the tool shaft to clear the rim as you clean up the bottom. The notched side allows scraper to cut underneath that same rim.

If this is the one you are looking at it appears you are correct and it would not work.

Here is a pic of the end of a Sorby... which is less than 90*.

Here is the Sorby cutter which fits their Multi-Tip Hollowing & Scraper tool (about $67).. It comes with three cutters but not the box cutter. It may save money in the long run due to being more diverse and also a lot heavier shaft.
