I am sanding a small Birdseye Maple Bowl. I recently read that at about 320 grit if you add sanding sealer you will be able to spot any scratches & tool marks before finishing. Now the bowl is smooth as glass. My question is can I use a walnut oil finish after it has had sanding sealer or would I be better off using Antique Oil or Bush Oil both of which I have in stock. Thanks in advance, Kevin

Once you put sanding sealer on the wood there is nothing to be gained by using an oil. It won't penetrate.

Thanks, That is what I thought. Any suggestions on a final finish. I have Waterlox, Mylands Bush Oil & Antique Oil on hand.

Hi Kevin,

Just curious what you are using for sanding sealer. I've seen people post that they use 50/50 Shellac and Denatured Alcohol an others say 50/50 Lacquer and Lacquer Thinner.

Thanks,
Jeff

I used Mylands brand right out of the can.

If the only goal is to spot your sanding scratches, then instead of using sanding sealer, sand up to 600 grit dry. North of 400grit, I find the dust lodges 'well' into the surface pores and scratches.
