I have a project in mind for this weekend that would involve painting some white melamine black.

Does any one have any experience doing this? Any special preparation of the melamine surface? I was expecting to sand the surface with 120 grit and then paint with spray on enamel.

BTW this is for an audio equipment rack and should not see harsh use. All replies welcome.

Thanks,

I think you will have better results if you just buy some black Melamine. It also comes in gray, red, blue, and green.

I thought of buying some black, but I wanted to complete this project this weekend and there is no place open that I can get the black - if any one in town even has it at all.

I'll try the painting route on some scrap first and see how it looks.

Thanks for the input.

Dan,
If you scuff up the melamine, your spray should work fine. It is easier to use black, but not always easy to fine. Go light on your first coats then paint as normal.
