While I was snapping pics, thought some of you might be interested in my solution to holding a board for dovetailing without a vise. Not as convenient, but it does the job for now.

Hey Dan I don't see a picture. I thought you was going to show us how you held boards while cutting dovetails, UNLESS I'm mistaken.

Now I think we see why you're having such trouble cutting dovetails.
:D

No offense to your vise solution {I've used similiar ones myself} but IME those quick grip clamps with the rubber pads flex under stress.

May not be noticable when you grasp the unit by hand to test the stability, but while sawing it may just wiggle about enough to cause you to "lose your line".

Oh, and build yourself a proper plane till while you're at it...it's a shame to see such nice tools sitting in plastic tubs. :D

Other than that, fine job, carry on. :p
