I found a site with vague information on how to engrave on steel in "color" with using a laser only  . Check it out http://www.color-laser-engraver.com/

Both these applications are bieng done with Yag laser markers not Co2 systems.

Its a nice application however the cost of the equipment is expensive. Ferro the metal marking paste mfg. has been working on colors for metal marking with the Co2 lasers for some time now. So its in the process.

How long? who knows all I can say is we have seen stuff but they want to perfect the material before it is offered for sale.

Here is my guess on smoke woods product. It is powder coat paint. I have not tried it but I am willing to bet a dollar that is what it is.

As long as you can just raster-laser the whole area to fuse the powder, it should work ok. But if you have to re-laser the original pattern, I can see all sorts of registration issues. Hard to tell from the pictures on their website.

I have tried it and If I have to guess Id say it was laser toner. It works OK but it is a real pain in the A** to get right and the colors don't come out and bold as they show unless we did not do it right. We followed there instructions and 5 plaques later we got something that looked OK not great.

Seems like I've read somewhere that powder for powder coating should be kept away from sparks or flame. I'd be very careful plopping that stuff in my laser without a healthy dose of scrutiny. I have these visions of turning on the vent and then the laser sparking it off.

That being said, it certainly does look like some type of fuseable powder. Almost has to be organic in nature.
