Jointer Setup help

Hi,
I am in need of some help tuning my old Sprunger jointer. I need to know how to best go about getting my tables coplanar and then how best to go about setting my knives (once I have them professionally sharpened).

This jointer is old and does not have spring up adjusters for the knives.

I have seen some pretty expensive straight edges and knife jigs and am trying to get this accomplished inexpensively.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as far as straight edge, shimming stock, jointer knife jigs and especially technique to get this accomplished.

I have three excellent illustrated articles for jointer tuning and setup that I have used when needed. One is from Fine Woodworking and one was published in American Woodworker some years back.
