Made a quick chalice this morning from a piece of "Fern Pine" (not actually a pine) aka "East African Yellowwood". A friend brought the trunk pieces over after a neighbor cut the tree.

This is wet, with no finish, but the grain looks promising.

I like it a lot!! And yes, when you put some finish on it the grain is really going to pop.
I've been bitten by the chalice bug myself, they are really fun to turn.

My first report on the test pieces of Fern Pine / East African Yellowwood is that nothing has cracked, and the first two weeks of drying show very little warping, but the mold starts within a few days. So I am sanding these as much as I can, as soon as I can, and then applying the first coat(s) of Danish Oil.

And by the way, I am posting this thread not because the shapes are special, but because I want to report on this unusual wood in case I or others come across more of it in the future. So I am starting the work on these as fresh logs newly cut.

I like the shape of the bud vase 2nd from the right.

Thank you for letting me know this is a bud vase. I made it simply to see if I could get it thin and translucent, but I had no idea what to call it.
