My wife has a nice set of bluetooth headphones made by Sony. Today she was using them and noticed that when she got close to the microwave when it was operating that there was a crackle in the headphones. The closer she got to the microwave the louder it got. Does this mean that the microwaves are traveling outside of the unit to about six feet away? Or, is it just power generation from the unit. I have no clue how microwaves generate the power.

Any ideas out there?

Bluetooth uses the 2.4 GHz band which is (I think) the same as a microwave.

Correct, actually the same as B and G WiFi also..During wifi site surveys one of the the check points for coverage issues was the presence of microwave ovens..
