Hey folks.

I just bought a used Makita 5104 off Ebay. It looks pretty well used, but the price was right.

I need to know if this is normal, or a sign of extreme wear:

When I turn it on & the blade starts turning, the blade "jumps away" from the motor. In other words, the arbor is loose. If I line up the blade with a pencil mark, then turn the saw on and cut, my cut ends up maybe 2-3 mm further to the right.

My Hilti 267e doesn't do this at all, so I'm a little concerned.

I've read that the Makita 8 1/4" saw has a bit of looseness, and that Eurekazone users add a thin washer inside the arbor to make it more precise. Is that what's happening here, just an odd design flaw, or does this sound like a problem?

If this is normal, has anyone ever added a washer to tighten it up?

Well, I managed to get a very cool Makita tech on the phone, and got my answer.

Evidently this movement is normal.

It's a little unnerving, though, since the saw doesn't have a soft-start circuit. You really feel that blade jump out when you start it up.
