What makes this screw particularly suitable for hardwood? The coarse threads look like they're for softwood.

I agree that this screw is more appropriate for softwoods. For shorter screws in hardwoods I prefer a finer thread and a shaft that is approximately the same diameter as the core. The coarse threads are not as much of a concern to me in longer lengths; I could be mistaken in this.

The main thing I look for is that the threaded portion of the screw does not cross the joint. This can cause creep, volcano and other problems. If I cannot avoid this, like with a fully threaded screw, I drill a clearance hole and then a pilot hole for the threads. Obviously we've all seen folks that just slam screws in without any pre-drilling but, I think we are asking about finer assemblies here, not deck installation. :)

The chisel point opens a hole and the sharp threads will cut into the hardwood.
